As one of the most historically intact cities in North America, Newport, Rhode Island is a  document of the history of urban development in America. From the 18th century grid of the Point neighborhood and the densely settled waterfront and Hill area, to the 19th century picturesque layout of Ocean Drive and the construction of the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge in the 1960s, the city possesses many layers of urban fabric.

This exhibition contains images and commentary on a group of maps that highlight key moments in Newport’s urban development. By exploring the past through the lens of these maps, we hope that we can better understand the dynamic and ever-changing nature of this iconic New England city.
